Thomas J Shields

Mr. Thomas Shields, MAI, has been associated with Joseph J. Blake and Associates, Inc. since 1985, and currently holds the position of Managing Partner at the Washington, D.C. office.

Mr. Shields began his career with the firm in the New York office and became the Assistant Manager of the Boston office in 1988. In 1992, he moved to manage the Washington, D.C. office and was named Managing Partner in 2011.

Throughout his career, Mr. Shields has steadily built an impressive roster of elite clients including lending institutions, insurance companies, special servicers, the federal government (GSA), local governments, pension funds, lawyers, developers, investors and mortgage brokers. He has extensive experience preparing appraisals for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac lenders.

The majority of Mr. Shields’ real estate appraisal assignments have been performed throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

A large scope of his assignments include multi-family, office, retail and industrial properties, as well as hotels, subdivisions, raw land, and special purpose properties. Additionally, he has performed market studies, consultation, expert testimony, litigation support and estate work.

A graduate of Gettysburg College, Mr. Shields has been involved in real estate appraising since the completion of his formal education. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree. Mr. Shields holds the MAI designation from the Appraisal Institute and is a State Certified General Appraiser licensed in Virginia, DC, Maryland, North Carolina and Tennessee.

As a Member of the Appraisal Institute (MAI) since 1992, he now serves on the Appraisal Institute of Washington D.C. Board of Directors and is currently the acting Treasurer. He was also the Chairman of the Commercial Real Estate Finance Committee for the Mortgage Bankers Association of Washington D.C. from 2007-2009.
